According to a report by Bloomberg News, Instagram is getting ready to launch a text-based app that will compete with Twitter. Although the software, code-named “P92” or “Barcelona,” is still under development, it is anticipated to be made available sometime in the summer of 2023.

The app will purportedly look and feel similar to Instagram, but it will emphasize text-based posts rather than visual ones. Users will be able to publish messages up to 500 characters long with links, images, and videos that they may also attach. Many Twitter-like features, like threaded replies and the ability to follow other users, will also be included in the app.

It is unknown whether Instagram will make the app available to the general public when it launches because the company is apparently testing it with a select group of celebrities and influencers. The growth of the app, however, indicates that Instagram intends to compete with Twitter in the text-based social media market by extending its audience beyond images and videos.

In recent years, Twitter has struggled to increase its user base and has been under increasing pressure from rival social media sites like Instagram and TikTok. The launch of Instagram’s text-based app may make it more difficult for Twitter to expand.

It is still too early to predict the viability of Instagram’s text-based app. Nonetheless, the creation of the app demonstrates Instagram’s commitment to challenging Twitter in the text-based social media arena.
